Japan considers doubling limit on skilled foreign workers

The Japanese government is considering raising the cap on the number of foreign workers accepted under a special residency status for specified skilled workers to over 800,000 over five years starting from fiscal 2024. This would more than double the current cap due to severe labor shortages in various sectors. The specified skilled worker residency status, introduced in April 2019, includes Type 1 for workers who can stay for up to five years, and Type 2 for highly skilled workers, which allows permanent residency.
