Summary
Malaysia plans to modernize its border control system by installing automated immigration gates and biometric verification nationwide by 2028. The initiative, led by the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency, will cover major Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security complexes across the country.

A total of 635 automatic gates will be deployed at 125 entry points to reduce reliance on manual inspections. This shift will allow immigration officers to focus more on enforcement and investigative work rather than routine checks.

The system will use biometric technologies such as facial recognition and automated identification tools to speed up processing and improve identity verification, helping to reduce fraud and strengthen security at official checkpoints. Traditional counters will remain as backup, and the system will be designed to operate even during network disruptions.

Authorities expect that stronger controls at legal entry points will also help curb illegal crossings, while broader digital upgrades will improve system reliability and transparency.
