Summary
In the Americas, Canada has announced its 2025 Express Entry categories, with a new education category designed to address labor shortages. The focus will be on inviting candidates with Canadian work experience (Canadian Experience Class) to apply for permanent residence. Additionally, to meet Francophone immigration targets and address shortages in healthcare, trades, and education, category-based invitation rounds will be held for candidates with strong French language skills and experience in these sectors.

In Europe, the European Union is gradually implementing the Entry/Exit digital border management system (EES) to digitally record the entries and exits, passport data, fingerprints, and facial images of non-EU nationals. The system is being rolled out over six months, aiming for full biometric functionality at half of the border crossing points within three months.

Ireland has announced changes to its employment permits system, effective March 10, 2025, to address skill shortages in the home care and planning sectors. The quota for home care workers will increase by 1,000 permits, and town planning officers have been added to the Critical Skills Occupations List to help with infrastructure and housing challenges.

In Poland, work permit and visa applications are facing stricter scrutiny, with random verification checks being applied more frequently. Additionally, a lottery system for national visa appointments (type D for work purposes) has been introduced in countries like India, Turkey, and Macedonia, leading to delays in the visa process.

In Switzerland, starting March 17, 2025, short-term work notifications must be submitted through a new platform, EasyGov.swiss, replacing the previous app, which will be unavailable from March 14-17, 2025. The new platform offers improved user guidance and allows companies to create profiles and grant access to additional users for the notification process.
