Summary
The Malaysian government plans to expand the use of the Immigration Department’s QR code clearance system for foreign travelers starting January 1, 2026. Currently, only Malaysians use the system, but it will be extended to travelers from at least 63 countries and those with long-term entry passes. To use the service, travelers must download the MyBorderPass mobile app, scan their passport details, and complete facial biometrics registration.

This system is already being used by some travelers at Kuala Lumpur International Airport for biometric gate checks. The expansion aims to make border clearance more efficient, reducing the need for immigration officers. For instance, the number of immigration officers could drop from 172 to 68. The QR code check takes only 5 seconds, compared to 15 seconds with biometric gates and several minutes for manual checks.

The MyBorderPass app, which has been downloaded by over 786,000 people, also allows travelers to check their travel status. Malaysia conducted a pilot for biometric clearance at the Singapore border last year. Similarly, Singapore has implemented a passport-less QR code system for immigration control.
